Hopes raised, hopes dashed. I started reasonably well, with most of the top half going in quite quickly, but made heavy weather of several clues in the bottom half that were really quite simple, like 12dn (Short trousers = BREECHES) where I was trying to think of another word for what I'd worn as a young boy. Strangely the answer I felt most doubtful about was 21ac (Good-bye (Italian) = ADDIO), which I vaguely remembered - though I was worried that I might simply be thinking of the Spanish adiós - but have never actually heard anyone use. Not really my kind of puzzle.

Congratulations to hjseidman and Jackie, who continued where they left off on Saturday. With another podium finish for Vicky, and with oughamh achieving her highest placing so far this year, this was another good day for the ladies. Commiserations then to lickert who just failed to join the others in the top 10.

Fastest time: 2:08 (hjseidman)
Slowest scoring time: 3:38 (mistigris)
Fastest non-scoring time: 2:43 (lickert)
My time: 4:28 (18th)
First to finish: MarkW (12:06 a.m.)
Number of entries: 39

Hopeless again

Another bad day. It was all going pretty well until I got to the bottom corner. I popped in LASTING at 15D, even though aware it didn't quite fit the definition. But I haven't been to Chester since I was at school, and although the river is the Thames of crosswordland, I didn't realise that was where it flowed. Some of the uncheckeds near the bottom almost (but not quite) read PARK LANE. The Nina will have to wait for Nestor. Jason

Re: Hopeless again

Your 7th place today was enough to take you to joint 2nd place in the monthly table and within striking distance of your "ton", so perhaps not such a bad day after all!

For once I spotted the Nina before looking at people's comments, but rather too late to claim any credit of course.

Good Nina spot, Jon. I thought that was a difficult puzzle, and so did a lot of other people, judging by the times posted so far! Last one in, I am ashamed to say (as a mathematician), was 17 ac - I just wasn't thinking of that sort of function! Sarah B.

I eventually got 17ac (Fundamental; function = INTEGRAL) from "function" (rather than "fundmental"), but I was horribly slow several other clues in the bottom half. (Sigh!)
